How to Be (and Coach) a Dean

Monday, March 18th: 9:30am – 11:00am MDT (8:30-10:00am PDT, 10:30-12:00pm CDT, 11:30-1:00pm EDT)
“Even more than presidents and provosts, whose lives are complicated by a set of responsibilities that reduces the importance of the academic mission in their daily work, deans must always identify with and be dedicated to the mission of academic integrity and excellence. And, in a last resort, deans will rise up in defense of the university’s mission, students, faculty, and broader cultural aspirations.” – George Justice in How to Be a Dean.
In this session, we will delineate the complex reality of leadership in academia and the importance of leadership development resources that understand the academic experience and advance the academic mission. In the first half of the session, George Justice will draw on his forthcoming book to articulate how higher ed leadership is different and the specific knowledge, frameworks, and strategies that equip a dean to be successful in this role.
In the second half, Firerook’s Diana Kardia will lead a discussion about the background knowledge, skills, and strategies that coaches must have to be an effective resource for deans and other academic leaders.
